This was shot maybe ~~two or three~~ four? or so years ago I think.. mini introduction to ‘noise’ with performance clips of Skin Graft, Instinct Control, Peter J. Woods, and myself. From one of several occasions when someone came by a show at Enemy asking to film and interview people because they were making a documentary about noise. Nice to finally see the results of one. AV Festival 12: Yoshi Wada: Sound Ship upon Tyne Live

This new composition for bass drum and highland bagpipes was performed live within Wada’s sound installation at the Discovery Museum.

Part of the American minimalist music and Fluxus scenes in 1960-70s New York, Wada was influenced by George Maciunas, La Monte Young and Pandit Pran Nath. The exhibition at Discovery Museum continues his pioneering practice of making musical instruments from plumbing pipes and electronics. The immersive sound installation is constructed from organ pipes, sheet metal, steel pipe, sirens, gong, alarm bells and a ship’s ventilator. Tuned to the architecture of the Great Hall, the work produces sustained, long drones reverberating through space.

Since 1981, Ellen Fullman has developed the “Long String Instrument,” an installation consisting of dozens of wires 50 feet or more in length, which she plays with rosin-coated fingers, producing what some call a “chorus of minimal overtones.” And the performance involves more than the sounds Fullman makes; the size of the instrument means the player must move like a physical performer, moving inside the wires to touch special points that produce specific sounds. So the instrument combines Fullman’s artistic expressions of everyday activities, such as walking, with a unique performance art sensibility. Fullman has developed a specialized notation system to choreograph the performer’s movements, exploring sonic events that occur at specific nodal point locations along the string-length of the instrument. It’s more than a high-art conceit; Fullman has collaborated with such recording artists as Pauline Oliveros, the Kronos Quartet and Keiji Haino. Fullman’s music has been granted international recognition and has been subject to numerous commisions and international awards. She has performed in a wide number of art galleries and centers.
